"A parent must not ignore his own study of Torah, for just as it is a commandment to educate his child, so too is a parent commanded to educate himself."
Moses Maimonides,
Mishneh Torah, 1:4
On almost any day of the week, you can participate in learning activities for adults sponsored by Emanuel Synagogue.
Starting with Erev Shabbat, Rabbi Fox always has an informative and thought-provoking sermon. Occasionally he will invite a serious "thinker" and "doer" from the larger Oklahoma City community to share his/her thoughts with us.
Shabbat mornings, before services, there is a study opportunity at 9:25. Click here for details.
Rabbi Fox and others participate in Inyun Tefillah twice a month. This is usually an explanation of some part of the service. The two other Shabbat mornings, before the Shacharit services begin, there is a musical "warm up" to review some of the liturgy, with an opportunity to add your own creative musical flourishes.
On Shabbat, of course, Rabbi educates us weekly with an explanation and discussion of the service's Torah portion. Study is again an integral part of the Minchah, Ma'ariv, and Havdallah services which close Shabbat.
On Monday evenings and Tuesdays at 1 p.m., adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah classes are in full swing. The classes are for beginners and intermediate students, and we are aiming for a Tu B'Shevat Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2007.
Thursday evenings are Rabbi Fox's classes in exploring Judaism. These classes meet throughout the year. They are often held at members' homes, so check the synagogue office for time and place.
In addition to these classes, the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Oklahoma offers lectures and speakers throughout the year.
Also available to us are programs at Hillel, the Jewish student organization at the Univesity of Oklahoma, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Oklahoma City, where we share in sponsoring JU, a Jewish University.
We can take advantage of the educational opportunities at the other two Oklahoma City synagogues, Temple B'nai Israel and the Chabad Jewish Center.
Finally, there are a wealth of informative and educational sites on the Web, including courses from beginning to expert level. Our Links page can get you started.
